Jailbreaking Amazon Kindle


This covers the current methods as of mid-2026. The scene moves fast — Amazon patches, the community adapts. Here's what works right now, step by step. Here's a(n) article / guide on how to jailbreak an Amazon Kindle.


Phase 0: Identify Your Target


Step 1: Find Your Model


Go to Settings → Device Info and note the first four characters of the serial number:

Step 2: Check Firmware Version


Same screen — Settings → Device Info → Firmware Version. This determines which jailbreak method works.

Phase 1: The Jailbreak - WinterBreak (Firmware < 5.18.1)


WinterBreak is the current standard for most Kindles. It exploits the Mesquito framework via the Kindle Store.


Prerequisites


  • Your Kindle MUST be registered to an Amazon account

  • WiFi must be saved — the device needs internet during steps 5–7

  • Storage must be nearly full — leave only 50–90 MB free. This prevents OTA updates from downloading automatically during the process. Fill it with large files (PDFs, comics, etc.) if needed

  • A PC with 7-Zip or WinRAR


Step-by-Step


1. Enable Airplane Mode — Settings → Wi-Fi & Bluetooth → Airplane Mode ON.

2. Reboot the Kindle — Settings → Device Options → Restart.

3. Download WinterBreak:



4. Extract the .tar.gz to a folder on your PC. Do NOT extract directly to the Kindle — it can fail silently. Then copy the extracted files to the root of the Kindle's USB storage. Overwrite if prompted.


On Linux/macOS: verify the hidden folder .active_content_sandbox copied correctly (ls -la on the mounted Kindle).


5. Eject the Kindle. Open the Kindle Store by tapping the cart icon on the home screen.

6. When prompted to disable Airplane Mode, tap "Yes." Mesquito loads. The WinterBreak icon appears.

7. Tap the WinterBreak icon. Wait ~30 seconds. The screen will display something like "Now you are ready to install the hotfix."

8. IMMEDIATELY re-enable Airplane Mode. Then check for and delete any update.bin.tmp.partial file from the Kindle's storage to prevent Amazon from applying a patched update.


Phase 1 Alternative: AdBreak (Firmware 5.18.1+)


If your Kindle shipped with or updated to 5.18.1 or newer, WinterBreak won't work. AdBreak targets these firmwares.


Step-by-Step (Summarized)


  1. Download AdBreak from the KindleModding site: https://kindlemodding.org/jailbreaking/AdBreak

  2. Extract the .zip to your PC

  3. Plug in your Kindle. Navigate to the Kindle's root storage

  4. Delete the existing .assets folder on the Kindle

  5. Copy the .assets folder from the AdBreak release to your Kindle

  6. Eject and reboot the Kindle

  7. The jailbreak triggers during boot via the replaced assets

  8. Once successful, enable Airplane Mode immediately and proceed to the hotfix


Phase 2: Install the Hotfix (Critical - Do NOT Skip)


The hotfix survives Amazon OTA updates. Without it, the next firmware update will kill your jailbreak.


  1. Download the universal hotfix: Update_hotfix_universal.bin

  2. Plug in your Kindle. Copy the .bin file to the root of the Kindle's storage

  3. Delete any other .bin files or update.bin.tmp.partial files

  4. Eject. Go to Settings → Device Options → Update Your Kindle (three-dot menu)

  5. Tap Update

  6. After the update completes, find the "Run Hotfix" booklet in your library and open it

  7. You must re-run this booklet after every future OTA update to re-apply the jailbreak


Phase 3: Block OTA Updates (Do This Before Anything Else)


Amazon pushes silent updates. If you connect to WiFi, you'll lose the jailbreak.


Method A: Create a blocker folder


  • Plug Kindle into PC

  • In the root directory, delete any existing update.bin.tmp.partial file

  • Create a folder named update.bin.tmp.partial (yes, a folder, not a file)

  • Set it to read-only (right-click → Properties → Read-only on Windows)


Method B: Use the rename OTA binaries extension


  • Once KUAL is installed (see below), use the "Rename OTA binaries" KUAL extension to neuter the update daemon at the system level

  • This is more robust than the folder trick


Critical: After blocking updates, you can delete the filler files that were taking up storage space. But do this only AFTER OTA is blocked.


Phase 4: Install The Toolchain - MRPI + KUAL


You need MRPI (MobileRead Package Installer) and KUAL (Kindle Unified Application Launcher) to run any custom software.


For WinterBreak / AdBreak (Use KPM)


WinterBreak and AdBreak include KPM (Kindle Package Manager). You can skip manual MRPI/KUAL install:


  1. Open the Kindle's search bar

  2. Type: ;kpm

  3. KPM opens. Use it to install KUAL, KOReader, and other packages directly


Manual MRPI + KUAL (Fallback or for LanguageBreak)


  1. Download MRPI and KUAL from the KindleModding site

  2. Extract MRPI — you'll get extensions and mrpackages folders. Copy both to Kindle root

  3. For KUAL, use KUAL Booklet (coplate) for modern Kindles. Drop the KUALBooklet_*_install.bin into the mrpackages folder

  4. Eject the Kindle

  5. In the search bar, type: ;log mrpi

  6. The screen will show "Hush, little baby..." — MRPI runs and installs KUAL

  7. KUAL now appears in your library as a book/document. Open it to access the launcher


Phase 5: Install KOReader


KOReader is the main reason people jailbreak — it handles EPUB, CBZ, PDF with proper cropping, and has far more customization than the stock reader.


Using KPM (WinterBreak/AdBreak):


  1. Search: ;kpm install koreader

  2. KPM downloads and installs it automatically

Manual install:

  1. Download KOReader for Kindle from: https://github.com/koreader/koreader/releases

  2. Extract the archive

  3. Copy the extensions and koreader folders to the Kindle root

  4. Eject. Open KUAL → KOReader → Start KOReader


For firmware 5.16.3+: Use Marek's KOReader Installer — download the scriptlet, place it in /documents, run it from your library, and it auto-downloads the correct version.


Additional Post-Jailbreak Mods


WinterBreak icon doesn't appear / only store homepage shows


Try the LocalStorage Replacement method:


  1. Delete the .active_content_sandbox folder from Kindle

  2. Reboot Kindle

  3. Disable Airplane Mode, connect to WiFi

  4. Browse the Kindle Store for 2–3 minutes. Download a free book sample

  5. Re-enable Airplane Mode

  6. Delete the cache directory: .active_content_sandbox/store/resource/LocalStorage

  7. Recopy WinterBreak files. Delete any stray .bin files. Reboot

  8. Open the Kindle Store again


Factory Reset recovery


  1. Factory reset the Kindle

  2. Before registering, copy WinterBreak files to the root

  3. Register, enable Airplane Mode immediately

  4. Delete the LocalStorage cache directory

  5. Reboot, open Store, follow normal WinterBreak steps


Jailbreak lost after an update


If you installed the hotfix: open the "Run Hotfix" booklet in your library and run it. The jailbreak is restored.


If you did NOT have the hotfix installed: you'll need to re-jailbreak from scratch using the method that matches your new firmware version. An update to 5.18.1+ pushes you to AdBreak territory.


Operational Notes


  • Airplane Mode is your friend. Stay offline unless you need the Store for a specific step. Re-enable immediately after.

  • The jailbreak itself is persistent across reboots once the hotfix is installed. You can power off, restart, drain the battery — it won't matter.

  • Amazon account required. You need a registered Kindle with a valid Amazon account for WinterBreak. This is the main operational constraint — you can't jailbreak an unregistered device via WinterBreak. LanguageBreak and older methods don't always have this restriction.

  • The jailbreak survives on-device factory resets if the hotfix is installed, but it won't survive a firmware reflash from Amazon's recovery mode.
