When doing legal wardriving or wireless research, one of the main pieces of information collected is the security type of nearby Wi-Fi networks. This information is broadcast publicly in Wi-Fi beacon frames, so it can be observed without connecting to the network. Common tools used for this include Kismet and airodump-ng (from the Aircrack-ng suite).
